Books on Leadership

Everyone is a prisoner of his own experiences.  No one can eliminate prejudices - Just recognize them.                          Edward R. Murrow

Among the Heroes, Jere Longman HarperCollins, 2002

There is a popular country song being played today the title of which is "Have We Forgotten"  I believe the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 are beginning to fade in the memories of many Americans.  I can assure you that after reading this documentary of flight 93 the memory of that horrible day will burn bright in my mind forever.  The author does a excellent job of taking the reader through the events that culminated in the passengers over powering the hijackers and crashing the plane into a field in Pennsylvania.  What is so haunting is how you seem to get to know many of the passengers and crew through the interviews with their friends and families.  The recounting of the phone calls between the passengers and people on the ground provides vivid details of what was happening on the plane and how the passengers were going to overpower the hijackers.  However the real impact of these calls is how you realize that the passengers and crew knew that they must retake control of the plane in order save the lives of hundreds on the ground.  They understood that the result of this action meant almost certain death and that is what makes them true heroes.
